  “There's something else I must tell you,” Jarod said quietly. “Since the day I met you, I haven't been with another woman, not in the intimate sense of the word. If I couldn't have you, I didn't seem to want anyone else."

  Two crystal drops hovered on her lashes as the last of her fears dwindled to nothing, and with a little gasp of sheer joy she wrapped her arms around his waist.

  “I never thought I could be so happy,” Amanda murmured, closing her eyes to savor the full ecstasy of the moment.

  “Nor did I.” His kiss touched her eye, her cheek, hovering below the lobe of her ear before it moved errorlessly to her mouth. “I think it's about time you took our son and your wayward Yankee husband home."

  “Yes, yes,” she repeated it again, more eagerly the second time.

  Reluctantly he let her leave his arms, the expression in his face urging her to hurry back even though she needed no such encouragement as she dashed into the house and quickly gathered her own and the baby's belongings. The curiously amused glances of her family went unnoticed as she gathered David into her arms, wishing them all a cheery good night before hurrying back to Jarod. When she reached the porch, Amanda started to hand her bag and the baby's things to him, but Jarod pushed them aside.

  “You drive home,” he ordered, his carved features transformed by a smile that softened every corner. “David and I haven't had a chance to get acquainted."

  A gurgle came from the blanket-wrapped infant as if he endorsed the statement, and both Amanda and Jarod laughed softly before the shining light of their eyes met. Gently Jarod gathered the baby in his arms.

  “I love you, darling,” Amanda smiled.

  “I must love you, too,” he murmured huskily, his dark gaze ardently returning the look in her eyes. A tiny fist pushed itself free of the blanket and Jarod looked down at it, offering an index finger that the little hand couldn't quite wrap around, although it tried. “Hold on, David. My cynical ways must be in the past, because I feel very proud of my handsome son.” His gaze strayed to Amanda as he added softly, “And my wife, too."
